- Login to Google Tag Manager
- Click to open GTM container
3. Click on Tags in the left navigation
4. Click on New to create a new tag
5. Add a descriptive tag name. Example: GA4 Event - Rental
6. Click anywhere in the white Tag Configuration section. Select Google Analytics.
7. Choose Google Analytics: GA4 Event from the list of tag options
8. Enter the Google Analytics 4 Measurement ID and Event Name. The event name will appear in GA4. Use these Google instructions to find the measurement ID in GA4.
9. Scroll down to the Triggering section and click anywhere.
10. Click on the blue plus sign to create a new trigger.
11. Enter a descriptive Trigger Name
12. Click anywhere in the white Trigger Configuration section.
- To set up RentalComplete or ReservationComplete events go to #13.
- To setup event for all other events go to #17
RentalComplete & ReservationComplete Events
13. Select All Elements.
14. Click the toggle next to Some Clicks. Select Click ID, contains, and enter the ID from the table below.

15. Click Save.
16. You will be taken back to the GA4 Event tag. You will see both the tag configuration with the measurement ID and event name AND triggering with the newly created event trigger. Click Save.
All Other Events
17. Select Just Links.
18. Click the toggle next to Some Link Clicks. Select Click Element, matches CSS selector, and enter pound sign (#), the ID from the table below, and “> a” without the quotation marks. See table Below

19. Click Save.
20. You will be taken back to the GA4 Event tag. You will see both the tag configuration with the measurement ID and event name AND triggering with the newly created event trigger. Click Save.
Preview and Debug New GA4 Tag
21. After adding a new GA4 Event tag, click the Preview button in the top right.
22. Click Connect.
The website will open in a new Tab.
23. Navigate to or click the button on the website to trigger the new event in the new tab that opened in the previous step.
24. Click back to the Google Tag Manager debug panel and view the Tags Fired section. You should see the even name of the tag you just tested.
Submit Changes
25. After previewing the website and testing the new event is firing correctly. Go back to Google Tag Manager and click Submit.
26. Add a descriptive name and/or detailed description of the changes. Click Publish.
27. If you want to track the new event as a key conversion event in GA4 use the steps below.
**Be mindful that the event will take at least 24 hours to appear in GA4.
- Login to GA4
- Click Admin
- Find Data display and click on Key Events
- Adjust toggle next to the event name
